“Studio Acoustics: Sound Thinking!”

This TR Tuesday, we dive into the world of studio acoustics with a panel discussion anchored by John Maizels. The session will cover essential principles, real-world experiences, and practical solutions for managing acoustic spaces.

Meet the Panelists

    • Glenn Leembruggen from Acoustic Directions: An acoustics and engineering specialist. Glenn has over 35 years of experience as a consulting acoustics engineer.  He’s a world leader in design of systems to achieve high intelligibility sound reinforcement in acoustically challenging environments.  He’s worked on the design for Parliament House, tunnels, concert halls, recording studios, and cinema sound reproduction.
    • Finn Masterton from Ortech Industries: Expert in acoustic treatment systems. Finn is a technical Sales Representative, he specialises in the product “Durra Panel”, produced here in Australia. Finn’s job is to help customers achieve almost impossible acoustic outcomes in a cost-effective way.

    • Chris Deacon from Artsound: Renowned for building high-quality music recording studios. Chris has been working in Community Radio since his student days at Radio ANU.  He’s designed and built consoles, presented and produced countless programs, He is one of the founders of Artsound, and was responsible not only for the design and implementation of Artsound’s uniquely designed studios, but also the ground-breaking Artsound recording studio.

    • John Maziels brings a career of studio implementation to Technorama, specialising largely in getting sensible acoustics out of whatever boxy room was handed over by the station’s landlords.  While building a TV/Education complex for IBM he learned all about the compromises it took to get architects, mechanical engineers, builders, trades and budgets to deliver an acceptable acoustic result.

What You’ll Learn

  1. General Principles: Focusing on smaller rooms and studios.
  2. Real Experiences: Sharing both positive and negative experiences in acoustic spaces.
  3. Isolation Techniques: Methods to prevent sound transmission.
  4. Acoustic Enhancement: Improving sound quality through managing reflection and resonance.
  5. Common Issues: Addressing frequent problems like doors and windows.
  6. Problem Solving: Solutions for external noise sources like planes, trains, automobiles, and adjacent rooms.
  7. Resources: Recommendations for further information and reliable references.
